Best Ellipticals for Seniors: Way to get fit fast!

Amelia Barr once said that ‘Old age is the verdict of life.’ It is certainly true regarding health, where the decisions you have made all along affect the quality of life you lead. Even more important are the choices you make daily: What to eat, how long you sleep, exercise.

As a senior, you need to remain as active as possible. One of the best ways to do that is through indoor training using elliptical machines. These have no impact involved and are very good for your joints.

It is also well understood that your body is not as it once were. While you can use the ordinary elliptical trainers quite comfortably, you would be better off with models that are better suited to your particular needs.

Best Ellipticals for the Elderly

There are several models in the market which fulfill that description, but only a few that excel. However, many seniors are already using elliptical trainers, and fortunately, we were able to reach them through social media channels. They gave their opinions regarding the best ellipticals that they have come across so far.

Here are the elliptical machines that are best suited to the elderly.

The E35 is unique in that it comes with an adjustable stride length of between 20″ and 22″. Anyone can use it comfortably, whether they are short or tall. For an older person, this is an important feature as it allows you to set the length that will not strain your legs.

Pulse monitoring is possible through the grip sensors mounted on the fixed handrails. Alternatively, it is telemetrically enabled, which means that if you have a chest strap, it will connect with it and show you real-time information.

For entertainment, you have a media tray for holding your tablet. This way, you can read, listen to music, or stream your favorite videos as you workout. There are two speakers built into the console to help you with the music, to which you can connect either through Bluetooth or a provided 3.5mm jack on the console.

  • Sturdy, robust construction and silky smooth operation.
  • Magnetic resistance system with motorized incline.

#2. Exerpeutic 1000XL

Exerpeutic 1000XL

Find out more on Amazon

The Exerpeutic 1000XL is a compact, sturdy elliptical trainer that is designed to offer intense workouts for those at beginner and intermediate levels. It is a simple machine, very affordable, and super reliable.

Past a certain age, seniors don’t need back-breaking exercise to keep in shape. Most doctors would even recommend that a simple walk and light jog is enough when done regularly. For such, the Exerpeutic 1000XL is more than enough.

For one, it is a compact machine that occupies only 48″L x 23″W. It also has a rear-drive configuration, which means that the flywheel is behind the pedals. A heavy-duty V belt drive system is used in this machine. It helps to make it operate smoothly and silently.

Exerpeutic 1000XL

For resistance, there is a magnetic resistance system with 8 levels. A manual system is in place to help you adjust the resistance, which consists of a tension knob on the console connected to the magnetic pads with a steel wire.

Unfortunately, this elliptical does not have an incline feature.

However, it does have pulse monitors to help you keep track of your heart rate. These are mounted on the fixed handlebars, and work by contact. It does not work with a chest strap since it is not telemetric, but the pulse sensors on the handlebars are sufficient.

Exerpeutic 1000XL

One disadvantage with the Exerpeutic 1000XL is the small stride length of 13″. That is quite small by most standards. For an elderly user, it is alright and is actually very comfortable. However, a tall and active person would feel restricted.

Unlike other entry-level ellipticals, the Exerpeutic 1000 also features a console with a display. It is a simple affair that is powered by AA batteries and is only able to display one piece of information at a time. You can, however, cycle through calorie count, mileage, pulse, time spent, and other metrics using a button.

Exerpeutic 1000XL

No entertainment options are available on this elliptical.

  • Very affordable, it will give you incredible value for money.
  • It has a solid, sturdy build that can accommodate users of up to 300 lbs.
  • Compact in size and is suitable for small spaces.
  • It comes with pulse sensors for progress monitoring.
  • Very smooth and quiet in operation.
  • The short stride length is an obvious drawback.
  • It lacks an incline.
  • The screen is tedious to use at the least, and there is no tablet holder.

Exerpeutic is a brand that likes to focus on delivering performance as opposed to luxury. That is what you get with this elliptical. It is especially suited for seniors because they don’t need the incline, while the stride length is suitable for their knees and feet.

Even if you’re not a senior, this elliptical can serve you very well.

Exerpeutic 1000XL Heavy Duty...
  • Your purchase includes One Exerpeutic Heavy Duty Elliptical, 1302 model; Without Bluetooth
  • Elliptical dimensions – 23" W x 54" L x 76" H; Item weight – 76 pounds; Weight Capacity – 300 pounds; Stride length – 13”; Ceiling height clearance – Consider the height of the tallest potential user, and add 21 inches minimum
  • 8 level magnetic tension resistance adjustments can provide the user with a more challenging workout

  • The precision balanced flywheel and V- belt drive provide a smooth and quiet operation. It will not interfere with watching TV or listening to music

#4. Teeter FreeStep Recumbent Cross Trainer

Teeter FreeStep Recumbent Cross Trainer

Find out more on Amazon

The Teeter FreeStep is what you get when you put a seat on a high-quality elliptical trainer. It is easy to confuse it with recumbent bikes, but the operation is quite different.

First, the Teeter FreeStep is a compact machine that occupies only 54″L x 38″W x 52″H. It can fit easily into almost any room in your house due to its small physical footprint.

It is supported by a tubular steel frame for strength and lightness and is rated for users who are up to 300 lbs (136kg) in weight. However, it is still fairly heavy and weighs upwards of 110 pounds.

When you want to make your workout intense, 8 levels of magnetic resistance are available. When adjusting the resistance, you turn a knob that is connected with steel wire to the magnetic resistance pads. The entire operation is very silent because there is no actual contact between the pads and the flywheel.

Teeter FreeStep Recumbent Cross Trainer

There are no incline options for the incline on the FreeStep. However, it does have a simple battery-operated console on which you can view your exercise data like time, mileage, RPM, and calorie count. It does not come with a pulse monitor, so you will need a different option for that.

  • You exercise while seated, so it takes the pressure off your knees.
  • It has a seat with an adjustable backrest and foam cushioning.
  • It is a full cross trainer, and you can choose to rest your feet and train your arms only.
  • It is compact and sturdy, which makes it ideal for home use.
  • It has an integrated tablet holder for entertainment.
  • Manual resistance levels are hard to specify.
  • It does not have a pulse monitor.
  • The screen display is very small, almost like a watch.

What to Look For When Buying Ellipticals For Seniors

Seniors need as much exercise as the rest of us. However, due to their age and possible medical issues, you need to be extra careful when buying exercise machines for a senior. You do not want to have an elliptical that ends up hurting you or a loved one, and you also don’t want a white elephant in the house.

Design: The design of an elliptical is the most crucial aspect. If you want a machine that can be used while seated, then a recumbent one is best. Of it you’re still working, then you could go for the under-desk Cubii.

If you’re still an active person, then you will want a full-blown machine with all the features such as incline and high resistance. The design also determines the durability of the elliptical you buy.

Resistance and Incline: Resistance is relatively standard in all machines, but there are different types. Magnetic and eddy current resistance systems are the best. If you’re not very active, then you may not need the incline and can thus go for a cheaper option.

You might also prefer ellipticals that have easy adjustments for resistance and incline instead of manual ones.

Stride Length: The stride length varies a lot with the design of an elliptical. In general, the most comfortable stride length should be about 18″ to 22″. Some models, such as the recumbent and the mini ellipticals, have unique elliptical paths that allow them to have much shorter paths.

If you’re short, get a shorter stride length and vice-versa. Or better still, find a machine whose stride is adjustable.

Size: This is one situation where size matters a lot. You need to think about where you’re going to put your machine, whether you will be moving it around, and where you can plug it in. If space is not an issue, then go all out and get yourself a full-size elliptical. If not, get a compact or a foldable elliptical trainer.

Extras: Motivation is a major factor in exercise. If you have the money, get one that has inbuilt speakers, a tablet holder, Bluetooth, and telemetry. Bluetooth and telemetry functionality will allow you to have wireless monitoring of your workout and to sync that data with your phone for sharing.

The saying goes that life begins at fifty, and not many people dispute that. By then, all you are interested in is living as full a life as possible. Exercise is a big part of part desire because it will keep you active and healthy.

All these ellipticals here, plus some others that have escaped mention, are very well suited to the exercise needs of seniors or even invalids. Each excels in their own way, but these five are the most popular among users.
