Schwinn 430 Elliptical Review- Is it Worth your Money?

The Schwinn 430 is the second most affordable elliptical machine in the Schwinn range of budget ellipticals. Costing just above $500, is it a combination of style, convenience, and affordability.

It would be great if all of us could simply take out a bike and ride through the countryside or on the beach when we want to exercise. But the trouble is that in this age, not everyone has the time, space and opportunity to do, and that is why indoor exercise has gained such momentum.

Schwinn 430 Elliptical Machine

Elliptical machines can be thought of as a combination of jogging and spinning. Now, take that initial cycling experience and mimic it but this time in an indoor exercise machine. That is the goal of all good elliptical machines, and it is what Schwinn is aiming for even with their budget models.

  • The Schwinn 430 is a front-drive elliptical, which means that the flywheel is located in front of the pedals. This design gives it stability and makes it compact.
  • Industrial quality steel tubing for the frame is the basic support structure for the Schwinn 430, which makes it very strong, durable and light.
  • There are fixed and movable arms, each with its function. You can use the fixed arms when you just want to work your lower body, and also to monitor your pulse. The moving arms are connected to the flywheel so that you can use them to work out your upper body at the same time. This makes the Schwinn 430 a cross-trainer.
  • Easy assembly which should normally take about an hour if you’re alone, less is two people are involved. A detailed guide is available for this.
  • The machine is not foldable, but it does come with wheels fitted at the front for ease of movement from one place to another.
  • 3 pairs of steel bars extend to the sides for maximum stability. However, you need to place it on a flat floor else it will wobble.
  • The frame comes with a 10-year warranty, the parts have 2 years, electrical components 1 year and an extra 3 months for labor in case the machine breaks down.

The Schwinn 430 features a 14-pound flywheel (6.35kgs), enhanced for inertia by having peripheral weights attached. This large weight is necessary to give a smooth performance, while also adding to the total resistance. A lighter one would feel jerky and unstable, while a heavier one might be too hard to start and stop.

For resistance, the Schwinn 430 makes use of eddy current brakes which is the most advanced system in use currently. Eddy current brakes are most silent, provide fine control over the resistance and are more reliable in the long run.

There are 20 levels of resistance available, which can either be increased gradually or through quick access buttons on the console. These range levels range from 1, 3, 5, 7 and so forth up to 20.

An incline system is also available on this elliptical. Unfortunately, it is not automated and requires that you dismount and adjust it manually. 6 positions of incline are available, with the highest setting being 100. This is still a very good feature that is great for those who want to take their exercise to the next level.

[title_mod title_line=”small-line” title_name=”Pedals, Deck and Rollers” title_color=”#dd3333″ title_line_color=”#dd3333″]

As a front-drive elliptical, the Schwinn 430 features a less sophisticated deck and roller design. The pedals are connected to solid steel bars that rest on rollers. These move on rails fitted with enclosed ball bearings, and the whole assembly, called the deck, determines the stride length of the machine.

One major advantage of the Schwinn 430 is that it features a 22†stride length, which is one of the largest available in this category. This makes it ideal for all types of people, even very tall ones with lanky legs. It also makes the motion more natural, as the stride length of a walking person is estimated at 30â€.

Schwinn uses industrial grade material for the deck, rollers and ball bearings because they are the most sensitive parts on the machine. They need regular cleaning and lubrication with silicone grease.

The pedals are deliberately oversized to allow for a variety of foot sizes and positioning, as well as to increase the safety factor by reducing the chance of falling off. That is a real concern, considering the pedals are at 11.5″ at their lowest and 22.5″ at their highest.

The pedals are padded with rubber for extra grip and to help cushion the feet as you work out.

  • Console

The Schwinn 430 has a unique 2-track display which is two screens that display different metrics. The smaller screen is positioned just below the tablet holder intentionally so that you can still monitor things like pulse rate, speed, time and mileage as you entertain yourself.

There are buttons on the console for the 22 workout programs available. These include a manual mode (also the Quick Start mode), 8 heart rate workouts, nine preset programs, 2 user-defined programs, and 2 fitness tests. It also has a Goal-Tracking feature, where you can see your progress in relation to preset goals. This is usually in terms of percentages achieved.

The console also allows you to set up to two user profiles where you enter your name and age. It will then display your information like heart rate, distance covered, calories burned, cadence (rpm), course profile, percentage of goal achieved, among others.

  • Monitoring

The Schwinn 430 uses two grip EKG pulse monitors your heart rate. These are mounted on the fixed handgrips and can display your pulse as long as your hands are in contact with the monitors.

Unfortunately, one major disadvantage is that this machine is not enabled for telemetry and thus cannot connect with a chest strap or other wireless monitor. This means that you would need to use other means such as fitness apps.

The good news is, it is enabled with MyFitnessPal so that you can upload your data and share it with family or friends.

Extra Features

The Schwinn 430 comes with a load of extra features for more convenience. It has the Schwinn Media Center, which consists of a tablet holder, 3.5mm jack and a USB cable. These enable you to charge your device and play music through the inbuilt speakers as you work out.

It also has a 3-speed fan that can be adjusted to direct air towards your head chest.

[wpsm_pros title=”Pros”]

With all its attractive features, the Schwinn 430 also has a few weak points. This is expected for this price point, where it is hard to get everything right and still maintain a low price.

  • Silent, 20-level eddy current resistance system.
  • Incline system, although manual and a bit limited.
  • The media center with speakers is a wonderful addition.
  • Large, heavy flywheel for smooth operation.
  • High strength tubular steel frame is strong and light at the same time.
  • The front-drive design makes the machine compact and stable.
  • Long stride length at 22â€, which is the longest in this category.
  • 22 workout programs are more than sufficient for most home uses.
  • Great customer service.
[/wpsm_pros][title_mod title_line=”small-line” title_name=”Schwinn 430 Elliptical Cons” title_color=”#dd3333″ title_line_color=”#dd3333″][wpsm_pros title=”Cons”]
  • One of the biggest disadvantages relates to an apparent inherent weakness in the bolts and nuts used to put the machine together. This applies especially to the joints connecting the moving arms to the stabilizer shafts, which just seem to shear off without warning.
  • Lack of telemetric ability for wireless monitoring.
  • The pedals are fixed, they offer no adjustment options.
  • Some customers report noisy operation. However, this is usually due to improper assembly and loose parts.
[/wpsm_pros]

Verdict

The Schwinn 430 is a great machine in every aspect, and from what the majority of customers have to say the only major complaint is the failure of the bolts. This is a major concern as it could even lead to injury. Some enterprising users have purchased industrial-grade ones separately and swapped them out. However, for those who had such problems, Schwinn has been very helpful and it seems that the issue has since been dealt with.

Other than that, the Schwinn 430 is worth every penny and more.
