Nautilus E614 Overall Build

The Nautilus E614 is a front-drive cross-trainer elliptical. That means, firstly, that its flywheel is mounted in front of the pedals. This design has become popular with top brands because it allows the machine to be more compact, and also because it is less sophisticated and cheaper.

The term cross-trainer means that it can be used to work out the upper and lower body at the same time. This is possible because of the movable handlebars which are connected to the flywheel. It provides the resistance necessary to make a good workout to your arms and core.

The frame is designed to be strong and durable while keeping it light and affordable. For this reason, steel tubing is used with precision welding to create a sturdy frame that can last for many years.

The weight capacity of this machine is 300lbs (136kg), which should cover most of the population.

Flywheel and Drive

The flywheel is central to the operation of the elliptical machine, and the Nautilus E614 is equipped with an 18-pound (8.16kg) flywheel for optimum performance.

This weight is considered average, but Nautilus enhanced the wheel for inertia by weighting it along the circumference. The result is a flywheel capable of smooth running, easy starting, and high-speed workouts.

The drive system between the pedals and the flywheel consists of a heavy-duty V-belt system. It is convenient for the machine because the belt allows silent operation and can last for many years due to low wear.

Besides, a belt drive also makes reverse movement possible. If you wanted to target different muscle groups, you just change the direction of your workout.  In both cases, the belt ensures efficient transfer of power to the flywheel with very little loss.

Pedals and Deck

The front-drive design means that this elliptical has a pretty simple design. The pedals are connected with rods to the flywheel and moving handlebars, and rest on a pair of rails.

There are rollers available which make contact with the rails, and these have ball bearings inside. The whole effect is a very smooth, very quiet movement. The footplates of the pedals are articulate in design and are made of plastic and a rubber cushioning cover. The result is a soft and natural movement that helps avoid strain and impact on your joints.

The Nautilus E614 has a stride length of 20″. It is quite comfortable for most people, but very tall ones might feel a bit constrained.

Resistance and Incline

The Nautilus E614 features a top of the range eddy current magnetic resistance system. It has 20 levels of resistance, which are easily controlled through the console.

The advantage of this type of resistance is that it is silent because it requires no contact with the flywheel. The other thing is that it allows precise control, unlike manual systems.

Unfortunately, it means that the resistance only works when the machine is plugged into the power source. It can be plugged into a standard 110V/220V socket through the adapter available.

This machine also offers incline for those who wish for a more challenging experience. It comes in the form of a manual, six-stage system that goes to a maximum 300 incline angle. It is one of the largest incline angles in this category.

The downside is that it is a manual system and not motorized. You can only adjust it by first pausing your routine and changing it. A lever is available for this purpose, which is located just behind the flywheel.

Monitoring

The Nautilus E614 offers two pulse monitoring options. The first is through the handgrips on the fixed handlebars. These have EKG sensors mounted, which will display readings on the console.

The second and more convenient option is through the use of a chest strap. The console is telemetrically enabled, which means that it can interpret analog signals such as from a pulse sensor. It syncs with the chest strap and displays the data on the console.

The good thing is that the Nautilus E614 comes with a chest strap, although you can also purchase your own.  The sensors on it are quite accurate too. Information like resistance, mileage, pulse rate, and time is used to calculate other metrics such as calories burnt and goal levels achieved.

Console

A decent console is available for the display of important information regarding your exercise. Nautilus makes use of a proprietary Dual Track technology, which means that two separate displays are available. The reason for this is that if you choose to use a tablet, the primary screen is obscured. You can then use the smaller one to track your exercise.

The information displayed includes pulse rate, time elapsed, RPM, speed, calories burned, mileage, type of workout program, etc. It allows for up to two users, which means that two people can use the machine and track their performance separately.

A lot of intuitive command buttons are found on the console as well. There are ten numbered keys for quickly setting the resistance levels, which account for half the levels available. There are also buttons for gradual increment.

There are also buttons for the pre-set programs. There are fun rides, challenges, and mountains, each of which has separate keys. There is also a Quick Start key, which is also the manual program, with a pause key to accompany it. Finally, there are keys for two fitness tests in which make up for the rest of the programs. These tests are Beginner and Advanced tests.

Extras

Nautilus has also added a few fancy extras in the E614 to make your experience more exciting. For one, there is a pair of speakers set into the console through which you can play music.

While doing that, you can place your smartphone or tablet on the holder provided and connect it with the 3.5mm port provided. You can also use the Bluetooth connection to play music.

A USB port is available for charging and data transfer. Also, a three-speed fan is available to help cool you off. You can direct the airflow to either your chest or your head as needed.
